While working out with teammates in the weight room last week, Westover (N.C.) quarterback Eric Kline got the phone call that he’d been craving.
Thiel College (Pa.) running backs coach Eric Sampson was on the other end, and the time had finally come. By the time that the call ended, Kline had received his first scholarship offer.
“It was amazing,” Kline told Legacy Library. “All the guys were hyping me up about it.”
The opportunity comes at the perfect time. Kline and the Wolverines are hard at work and preparing to put last year’s disappointing 3-8 finish behind them.
Kline more than did his part, throwing for nearly 2,000 yards with an impressive 17-4 TD-INT ratio. He’s a prototypical pocket passer, and the 5-foot-11 Kline is more than willing to acknowledge needing to improve his mobility.
“My accuracy is a big part of my game, but I feel like I really enhanced and worked on my speed this summer,” Kline said. “I feel like I’m a faster guy than I was last year.”
Less than three weeks remain until Westover begins the 2026 season against Union Pines, and Kline is ready to make his presence felt. There’s at least one school that believes in his ability to play at the next level.
Performance is one thing, but Kline has other ways to ensure people know his name.
“I’m the hardest worker,” Kline said. “I always come in with that mentality as a quarterback. I’m anyone that [the team] needs me to be.”
