Classes just started, and Bishop Moore Catholic High School (Fla.) placekicker Nico Salas understands the assignment.

“If coach needs a touchback [or] if coach needs a field goal, I want to be that guy that’s reliable, and that he can trust,” Salas told Legacy Library.

That’s exactly what Hornets fans and college coaches alike should want to hear ahead of Salas’ senior season. Not only did he impress as a placekicker, but he also averaged nearly 42 yards per punt, with seven inside the 20-yard line. That would have ranked 13th among NFL punters.

Air Force clearly has high hopes for Salas, who publicly announced a scholarship offer from the Falcons on July 31. He offered extensive praise for running backs/slot receivers coach Jake Campbell, who also recruits Florida.

“I’ve always known that I have what I need to kick at the highest level,” Salas told Legacy Library. “And that proves it to myself, and it takes some weight off my shoulders.”

Although Air Force is currently his only offer, Salas said that he remains in close contact with other schools. The Falcons currently have 33 verbal commits in their 2027 signing class, though none are placekickers.

Bishop Moore opens its season against Hawthorne on Aug. 21. The Hornets are chasing their third state football championship and first since 2015.

“We all chose one word before the season started, and it’s gonna be on the back of our helmet, and that’s just ‘reliable,’” Salas said. “I want to be reliable in the classroom. If someone needs someone to talk to or someone needs a ride home, I want to be that guy.”
