Happy Monday! Let’s get right to it in this week’s Legacy Library Newsletter.
August typically means you start seeing preseason high school and college content, especially during those first couple weeks of training camp. Who is poised for a breakout? What are the position battles looking like? And my favorite: the story about a punter or kicker. FAU fans of a certain era will remember the “VLADI FIELD GOAL ALERT” running gag.
Last week, I unveiled Legacy Library’s content strategy for the coming months. Go check it out if you haven’t already, but the point is the same: we are an independent outlet striving to cover high school and college athletes nationwide.
And yes, we’ll show the punters and kickers some love soon.
But in all seriousness, the preseason is an excellent time for coaches and players to prove how much faith they have in themselves and the team. But as with anything, I suggest being aware of the inherent danger that comes with guarantees.
We live in a very tumultuous time of news coverage and media distribution. There is a difference between showing confidence and putting the opponent on blast, and it’s important that you have the receipts to ensure your words aren’t twisted. Once they leave your mouth or keyboard, they belong to someone else, too.
And if you feel that your comments are being misrepresented, then ask people you respect about how to address the issue with the reporter or media member. There is no shame in advocating for yourself, and it’s why restricting access the way that colleges and the WNBA do is an awful idea. Student-athletes deserve to push back.

For what it’s worth, I honestly love a good guarantee, solely because of all the different ways that someone can either be proven correct or give the impression that they have the intelligence of a mango.
Sometimes, you end up like former All-Star shortstop Jimmy Rollins, who predicted ahead of the 2008 season that the Phillies were the “team to beat.” Indeed, the Phillies won their first championship since 1980, with Rollins playing a monumental role, as he often did.
Other times, you have a Rex Ryan situation. Look, he wasn’t alone in thinking that the Jets could realistically compete for a Super Bowl when he guaranteed a title ahead of the 2011 season. They’d just reached consecutive AFC Championship games, and Darrelle Revis was flourishing in his prime.
Yeah. So the 2011 Jets started 8-5, lost three straight, and haven’t returned to the postseason since Ryan’s comments.
We know how some of the media’s bad elements work. Humility and loving your team’s culture don’t sell. They want a Rex Ryan prediction mixed with a Stephen A. Smith-level screaming rant.
Use your judgment, and all will work out. Unless you’re picking the Jets to make the playoffs. In which case, put the controller down.
