Joel Taylor and Mercer began August in style, snagging their first potential quarterback of the coming recruiting cycle.
Millbrook (N.C.) athlete Bryson Gray publicly committed to the Bears on Saturday, choosing Mercer over three other schools, including Bill Belichick and North Carolina.
The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Gray had previously teased the news on July 18, when he announced his top four schools: Mercer, North Carolina, East Tennessee State, and North Carolina A&T.
Mercer has won at least nine games in each of the last three seasons.
Gray is the 15th verbal commit of Mercer’s 2027 recruiting class and the second athlete; Jordan Bush of Lee County, Ga., pledged to the Bears on June 16.
Gray and the Wildcats open the season at Garner on Aug. 21. Millbrook went 13-1 last year, with its one loss coming to Hough in the 8A state championship game.
The 2026 Early Signing Period is expected to begin Wednesday, Dec. 2, and run through Friday, Dec. 4. Players who sign their letter of intent during that period can then enroll early.
Adrian Slansky commits to Sam Houston
Magnolia (Texas) tight end Adrian Slansky intends to stay in the Lone Star State after verbally committing to Sam Houston State.
The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Slansky announced his pledge to the Bearkats on Saturday afternoon. He’d officially received at least seven scholarship offers, including Nevada.
Slansky is the 11th player to publicly commit to Phil Longo and Sam Houston, and the second tight end, joining Prosper (Texas) standout Elliott Brown. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Brown announced his decision in June.
Adding Slansky and Brown should go a long way in helping Sam Houston emerge as a reliable mid-major program. The Bearkats are 15-22 since moving to the FBS level in 2023, including a 10-2 finish.
However, the Bearkats are only two years removed from going 10-2 and winning the New Orleans Bowl.
Slansky and Prosper open the 2026 season on Aug. 28 at Rockwall. The Eagles went 11-2 and lost to Southlake Carroll in the Class 6A Division II regional semifinal. That game caught attention for its four-hour weather delay, which forced kickoff to 11:15 p.m. and ended shortly before 1:45 a.m.
Eric Kline secures first college offer
Congratulations are in order for Westover (N.C.) quarterback Eric Kline, who received his first offer on Wednesday courtesy of Thiel College, a Division III school in Pennsylvania.
Kline told Legacy Library that he and teammates were in the weight room when the call from Thiel running backs coach Eric Sampson came in.
“It was amazing,” Kline said. “All the guys were hyping me up about it.”
