If you ever doubted the idea that anything is possible, consider that one can go from a Panther to a Lobo.

That might sound strange to you, but certainly not to Princeton High School (Tex.) track and field standout Sydney Smith, who had an official visit at the University of New Mexico this month.

Landing Smith would be a monumental get for Darren Gauson. The electric senior earned a scholarship offer from Kansas earlier this summer and spent time in Lawrence in August.

Smith owns personal-best marks of 13.67 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles and 19 feet, 11.25 inches in the long jump, according to MileSplit.

Earlier this year, she ran 13.73 seconds in the girls’ 100-meter hurdles.

“What I want the world to know about me is that I’m an athlete and that I’m extremely coachable, and I have a lot of room to grow,” Smith told Legacy Library this summer.

Smith remains uncommitted as of Sept. 28, and she still has plenty of time to make her decision. The 2026 Early Signing Period is expected to begin Wednesday, Dec. 2, and run through Friday, Dec. 4. Athletes who sign their letter of intent during that period can then enroll early.
