While his peers are buying back-to-school clothes and dreading the return of homework, Cajon High School (Calif.) quarterback Marcus Washington Jr. has a different way of preparing for his sophomore year.

Washington announced on Wednesday that Kyle Willingham, Koy Detmer, and the Michigan Wolverines had officially offered him a scholarship. The 6-foot-3, 170-pound Washington already has 10 offers, nine from Power 4 programs.

College offers always feel special, regardless of the level, though earning the interest of a blue blood like Michigan carries significant weight.

“It hit me when Coach Detmer started describing the history that goes into Michigan,” Washington told Legacy Library. “That’s when I was like, wow.”

Washington threw for over 2,000 yards and 22 touchdowns for the Cowboys, who went 7-4 and lost in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs. However, Washington lived up to the pressure after a 1-3 start and led Cajon to its 12th consecutive winning season.

Teams couldn’t stop Washington in the air or on the ground, as he rushed for nearly 700 yards and nine touchdowns. He earned Citrus Belt League Offensive MVP honors and is widely considered one of California’s more intriguing underclassmen football players.

Fittingly, Washington told Legacy Library that Wolverines quarterback Bryce Underwood is among the quarterbacks he studies.

Michigan is only the latest notable program contributing to Washington’s surging recruitment. Vanderbilt, Kentucky, and Utah all offered scholarships within a four-day stretch in May.

Washington and the Cowboys open the season and their latest championship chase on Aug. 20 against Etiwanda. Cajon previously won state championships in 1987 and 2017, the latter coming with future Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels at quarterback.
