Brainerd High School (Minn.) sophomore quarterback Malik Lauer has spent September turning the difficulty down to rookie mode.
Lauer opened the new season by throwing for 298 yards and scoring four total touchdowns, three passing and one rushing, in a thrilling 38-32 road victory against Buffalo on Sept. 3.
Clearly, that wasn’t good enough for Lauer, who followed that up with 212 passing yards and 52 rushing yards in a 51-0 rout of Duluth East. He scored another four touchdowns before the starting offense departed midway through the third quarter.
“We’re just all one good team,” Lauer told Legacy Library. “We’re moving together, and nobody’s separate from anybody else. We’re all one team sticking together, trying to win the games.”

MaxPreps is all-in on Lauer and his teammates, ranking them the No. 43 team in Minnesota as of Sept. 14.
Not only is Lauer a dynamic dual-threat quarterback, but he also plays receiver during the offseason. His versatility should help his recruiting stock down the road, especially ahead of next spring’s football camps.
“I’m an athlete, and I can play whatever a coach would ask me to play,” Lauer said.
Next up for Lauer and Brainerd is a home clash with Sauk Rapids-Rice (0-2) on Friday night. The Storm allowed 92 points in their first two games, and they’ll have their hands full with the Warriors’ high-octane offense.
