High School Football Recruiting: North Texas Commit Isaiah Rasheed Ready to Thrive After Position Switch

For much of his childhood and youth football career, Humble Atascocita (Texas) standout Isaiah “Rocket” Rasheed spent his time at quarterback.

And even as he continued to succeed and draw college attention, something still felt off.

“My whole life, I’ve always been arguably the best athlete on the team, but I was at quarterback,” Rasheed told Legacy Library. “And I felt like, maybe, my skillset was limited, because I was depended on to get the ball out … and I couldn’t really showcase my athleticism.”

Rasheed made the full-time switch to receiver last year, firmly putting him on Division I programs’ radars.

This past Monday, Rasheed verbally committed to North Texas, where he’ll continue playing receiver. Baylor legend and 2011 Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III was among those who congratulated Rasheed on his college announcement.

Arizona, Texas Tech, and Tulane were among the FBS schools that offered Rasheed, who said he received more attention as an athlete rather than solely as a quarterback.

“Receiver definitely is more of a position that fits my skillset,” Rasheed said. “I’ve always been able to catch. It wasn’t really hard to transition from quarterback to receiver.”

A collarbone injury cut Rasheed’s junior season short, though he is fully healthy and ready to go for training camp. He is also an accomplished runner who won a gold medal in the triple jump at the 6A Regional Track Meet last month.

“That’s unfortunate, but that’s football,” Rasheed said of his collarbone injury. “This year is definitely gonna be a statement year, and everybody is gonna know why I’m a D-1 football commit.”

Fittingly, Rasheed committed to play for Mean Green receivers coach Kishawn McClain, who knows all about position changes.

Like Rasheed, McClain was also a high school quarterback, though he became a permanent defensive back in college. He grew into an All-Conference USA safety at North Texas, ending his career with 336 tackles, seven interceptions, five forced fumbles, and two recoveries.

McClain later played professionally in the CFL before transitioning to coaching.

“I try to use his coaching because he’s been there,” Rasheed said. “He’s played at the top level, and it’s definitely helping me, as far as my craft goes.”

Rasheed said he believes that he has made significant improvements in his footwork and route running.

The 2026 Early Signing Period is expected to begin Wednesday, Dec. 2, and run through Friday, Dec. 4. Players who sign their letter of intent during that period can then enroll early.

Humble Atascocita opens the 2026 season against Katy on Saturday, Aug. 29.

“I’m unstoppable whenever I have the ball in my hands,” Rasheed said. “All I ever needed was an opportunity.”
