A fundraising effort is underway to support the family of Chanhassen (Minn.) basketball player Lucy Hilgert after her mother, Kaari, was diagnosed with breast cancer this summer.
Kaari is beginning treatment in the coming weeks, with chemotherapy and surgery ahead. The diagnosis has also created a financial challenge for the family as she steps away from her work as a personal trainer and health coach.
A GoFundMe has been established to help cover expenses associated with her treatment while she is unable to maintain her normal workload. The fundraiser is also intended to help with the additional costs that come with cancer treatment.
The family is asking for support as Kaari begins treatment. Donations of any amount are welcome, and sharing the fundraiser is another way to help bring attention to the family’s situation. The GoFundMe had raised nearly $9,000 as of Monday morning.
Lucy Hilgert is a sophomore at Chanhassen and one of Minnesota’s highly regarded young guards. She recently received a Division I scholarship offer from St. Thomas and has attracted interest from programs around the country.
