Not even surpassing 1,000 receiving yards and scoring double-digit touchdowns in his sophomore season was enough to please Westminster Academy (Fla.) star Drew Barbar.
Now only days from the start of his junior year, Barbar believes he’s identified the key to only increasing those numbers. As he puts it, he’s spent the offseason working on “finding open grass.”
“I’ve adopted it as a role, trying to find open spots within the defense or find the open zone,” Barbar told Legacy Library. “Really just get as open as much as I can.”
The 6-foot, 160-pound Barbar burst onto the scene with 64 catches, 1,032 yards, and 11 touchdowns last season. He also helped handle kickoffs, averaging 47.4 yards on 11 attempts.
However, Barbar will have a new quarterback throwing his way. Aidan Wallhoff, a ninth grader who served as the backup last year, replaces the since-graduated Cortland Brownfield.
Barbar praised Wallhoff for playing “like a senior” and showing excellent accuracy and composure throughout the summer.
“I feel like our offense is gonna be very flashy this year,” Barbar said.
Westminster opens its season against the Episcopal School of Jacksonville next Friday night. Although the Lions have not had a losing season under coach Ehren Wallhoff, they are still seeking their first championship since 1990.
“I feel like our team has really come together these past couple of weeks,” Barbar said. “The goal is to win a state championship.”
