UAB defensive back Darrell Sweeting opened his first season with the Blazers by making five tackles Thursday night against Illinois.
Sweeting finished with five tackles, including three solo stops and 0.5 tackles for loss, as UAB fell 42-23 to the Fighting Illini in Champaign.

The redshirt junior transferred to UAB after spending the 2025 season at Marshall, where he recorded 37 tackles and an interception. Sweeting began his college career at Temple before moving to Marshall.
Sweeting chose UAB partly because of defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and the opportunity to play in a defense that fits his aggressive style at cornerback. He previously told Legacy Library that Kaiir Elam, whom Grantham coached at Florida, helped him understand what he could expect from the system.
“I got to talk to Kaiir about the defense that he runs, and it fits in more in [alignment] with my game,” Sweeting said. “Which is like a press man, get-in-your-face corner that can drop off in zones and read the QB.”
UAB will return home next Saturday and host Louisiana-Monroe (0-1) at Protective Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. local time on ESPN+.
