College Football: Tre’Von Taylor Looks to Turn Hampton’s Season Around After Claiming Starting QB Job

It took longer than expected, but Tre’Von Taylor has finally become a full-time starting quarterback again.

Taylor, who transferred to Hampton this past summer, has started the Pirates’ last two games. He threw for a season-high 259 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in last Saturday’s 44-20 loss to Campbell.

Always a threat with his legs, Taylor also led the Pirates (1-4) with 35 rushing yards.

Taylor, who spent the last three years at Iowa Central Community College, ends September having completed 53.5% of his passes for 612 yards, three touchdowns, and five interceptions.

Saturday’s showdown with Howard (1-3) presents a pivotal opportunity for Taylor and the Pirates, who seek their first winning season since 2018. Only three of Hampton’s final seven games are at home.

“The coaching here, they just want to be great and change Hampton’s football culture,” Taylor told Legacy Library earlier this year. “That’s what I’m all about. That’s what I did at [Palm Beach Lakes High School], and hopefully, I can do it here, too.”

Taking down Howard and heading into their bye week at 2-4 would certainly go a long way in validating Taylor’s faith.
