College Football: UAB Running Back Ja’Vin Simpkins Rushes for Season-High 31 Yards in Upset Win Over Navy

UAB running back Ja’Vin Simpkins made the most of his increased opportunities Friday night — and in front of a nationally televised audience, no less.

Simpkins rushed for a season-high 31 yards on five carries in the Blazers’ 24-20 upset over Navy. Consider that the Miami native had only 12 carries and 40 yards in UAB’s first three games.

UAB entered play as a +6.5-point underdog but took the lead on Bam McReynolds’ 48-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. Friday marked the Blazers’ first American Athletic Conference game, and they certainly picked the right time to start 1-0 in league play; ESPN aired the Salute to Service showdown as a lead-in to Clemson’s victory over California.

Simpkins has 84 yards from scrimmage (71 rushing, 13 receiving) and is still seeking his first Blazers touchdown. He transferred from Coastal Carolina this past offseason.

We’ll see whether he gets extended action against FCS Samford in the Blazers’ final non-conference game next Saturday. UAB resumes AAC play against Memphis (3-1) on Oct. 10.

Simpkins and the Blazers are chasing their first winning record since 2022.
