With a national audience watching, UAB defensive back Darrell Sweeting proved why he’s now playing in the American Athletic Conference.
Sweeting continued a strong start to his Blazers career, racking up four tackles (one for a loss) in Friday’s 24-20 upset of Navy. The Marshall transfer also broke up two passes in the comeback win, which aired on ESPN ahead of the Clemson-California game.
UAB entered play as a +6.5-point underdog for their AAC opener. However, the Blazers (2-2, 1-0 AAC) took an early fourth-quarter lead and held off the Midshipmen’s potent rushing offense.

Sweeting has 16 tackles and three pass deflections through his four games in Birmingham.
UAB closes its non-conference slate against FCS Samford next Saturday. The Blazers have a bye week before resuming AAC play against Memphis (3-1) on Oct. 10.
Sweeting and the Blazers seek their first winning record and bowl appearance since 2022, their final year in Conference USA.
